Building the Roadmap

Roadmap Delivery & Governance

3 min read IT Strategy & Operations

Turn the plan into shipped outcomes with owners, checkpoints, and reviews.

Learning objectives

  • Assign owners and timeframes
  • Review progress on a cadence
  • Keep the roadmap a living document

Owners and timeframes

Every roadmap item needs a named owner and a timeframe. Without ownership, the plan is a list of wishes. Tie timeframes to business windows such as financial quarters.

Regular checkpoints

Meet on a fixed cadence - for example monthly - to review what shipped, what slipped, and what changed. Slip is normal; silence is not.

A living document

The roadmap reflects the latest understanding. Priorities shift, markets change, and new facts appear. Revisit and re-prioritize, but version the changes so the history stays clear.

Key takeaways

  • Ownership and timeframes convert plans into outcomes.
  • Fixed checkpoints catch drift early.
  • A roadmap that never changes is a roadmap nobody reads.
